The Georgia Flood with The Royal Johnson live at The Hummingbird

$5

The Georgia Flood: Groove-heavy and Genre-bending, The Georgia Flood’s music has evolved over the years. Their new album, People Like Ourselves, draws on indelible melodies, clever lyrics, and an infectious energy; weaving together an EP that hits all the right notes. The Atlanta based duo, Lane Kelly and Brooks Mason, are brothers who began playing when they were seven and nine years old respectively. Hustling birthday parties and family reunions the brothers changed sounds numerous times through their teens. Drawing on their exploration of numerous genres, their songwriting channels classic guitar driving riffs with modern pop sensibilities. The Royal Johnson: Royal Johnson began with just one song. Founders Chance Royal and Andy Johnson got together in May of 2014 to record a simple demo, just for fun, of a song that Johnson had recently written. He laid down some basic guitar and vocals, leaving Royal to work on the song for a couple days. In that time Royal filled out the song, adding bass and layered guitar work. The new creative outlet was a welcomed change for the creatively frustrated guitarist.

Angela Perley and The Howlin’ Moons w/ Roxy Roca live at The Hummingbird

$5

Armed with electric guitars, swooning vocals, and songs that split the difference between rock & roll and dreamy psychedelia, Angela Perley & the Howlin’ Moons pack the biggest punch of their career with Homemade Vision. Like the band’s debut, Hey Kid — an album whose kickoff track, “Athens,” earned Perley an International Songwriting Award in 2014 — Homemade Vision was recorded in the Howlin’ Moons’ hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Many of the songs were dreamt up somewhere along the highways and backroads that crisscross America, though, coaxed into life by a group of roots-rock road warriors who regularly play more than 100 shows a year. As a result, Homemade Vision is the sort of wide-ranging record that creates its own geography, building an imaginary place where the influences of David Gilmour, Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin, and Nebula all intersect. It’s also the work of a genuine band. Chris Connor’s guitar playing — a flurry of fuzz, crunch, twang and bang — occupies just as large a role as Perley’s voice, while Billy Zehnal’s bass — coupled with cymbal crashes and snare hits from an arsenal of heavy-hitting drummers — glues the mix together. Inspired by love, heartbreak, and everything in between, Homemade Vision is a battle cry from a band that’s spent years fighting the good fight, carving out their own brand of atmospheric, aggressive Americana along the way. Roxy Roca: No one leaves a Roxy Roca show dissatisfied. A sonic shot to the arm of Texas infused, powerhouse-southern soul and funk complete with a certain tightness only achievable after playing an average of more than 220 shows a year. Roxy Roca shows are like stepping into a tent-revival somewhere in the Deep South, and crooner Taye Cannon is here to speak the gospel. Each tune flows over with hooky guitar riffs, funky backbeats, slammin’ horn lines, and lyrics of love, heartache, and a message of choosing happiness above all else sung with a conviction and sincerity as only Roxy Roca’s green-eyed Soul-Cannon can deliver. Hailing from Austin, Texas, the band has come a long way in the short time it has existed. 2015 brought with it the release of Roxy Roca’s latest album, Ain’t Nothin’ Fancy, on Stag Records. Recorded at EAR Studio in Austin with producer Lars Goransson at the helm, the record captures the classic sounds reminiscent of Stax, Motown, and Domino Records. One might say the band wears its influences on its sleeve, and any member of the six-piece soul outfit would happily list off the forefathers of soul and funk. Now two albums deep, and hundreds of shows later, Roxy Roca has had the good fortune to share the stage with some incredible acts ranging from outright classics such as B.B. King, Tom Jones, and Lee Fields to more modern acts like Fitz and The Tantrums, Mayer Hawthorne, Trombone Shorty, and Vintage Trouble. The future looks bright for Roxy Roca, and there is no end in sight.
