Tesheva live at The Hummingbird

$5

Complimentary musicianship and a unique sound brought four individuals together as the self-described Southern Psychedelic quartet, Tesheva. Drawing influence from funk, rock, blues, and progressive instrumental music, the local favorites create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere which lends itself to groovy vibes and spacey jams while not skimping on the rock-n-roll. Originally a trio, Vaughan Brenner on drums, Matt Dunaway on bass, and Caleb Hutson on guitar laid the foundation for the band and it's sound. With the induction of Michael McCoy in the spring of 2015, the four piece group began to identify and refine their brand of music dubbed "Southerndelic." Tesheva has seen success in Mississippi and Alabama after releasing their EP, and playing with local and regional acts. The band aims to play many more shows and release a full length album in the coming year.

Swain and The Highway Souls live at The Hummingbird

$5

Since the band's inception in summer 2014, Swain and the Highway Souls has created a great deal of buzz and anticipation in the Middle Georgia music scene. While a relatively new band, the musicians comprising the group bring over 50 combined years of professional performance experience coupled with advanced levels of musical education, training, and preparation. Prior to leading the band, Stephen Swain blazed through the southeast, performing in top venues in Nashville, Atlanta, and Macon as a promising singer/songwriter. He continues to work with vocal coach Torri Barnette-Broxton (formerly of Miami Sound Machine) and Grammy-winning artist Linda Davis. Guitarist Miles Benson has a great deal of experience performing in a number of unique mediums, primarily as a result of his time earning a degree in Music Education and Music Therapy at the University of Georgia. He also continues to improve his craft through individual and collaborative songwriting. Cliff Walton, keyboardist for the band, has over 25 years of performance experience through a variety of ensembles that have traveled and performed throughout the country. The newest member of the band, bassist Joe Palmer, has been a vital member of the Macon music scene for quite a few years now. Growing up around the likes of Chris Hicks of Marshall Tucker Band, among others, Joe has a unique bass style that adds a great deal to the band's sound. Finally, drummer Galen Jacobs brings a solid foundation to the band after having experienced an eclectic drumming career that started with high school marching drumline, has included touring with the Josh Daniel Band, and continues to develop through the study of numerous styles and techniques which can be heard in the music of Swain and the Highway Souls.

Royal Johnson w/ Pine Box Dwellers live at The Hummingbird in Downtown Macon

$5

Royal Johnson: After just one rehearsal the current RJ lineup made its first performance on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at the annual Jodie Jam at The Big House, with R&B legend Robert Lee Coleman (James Brown, Percy Sledge) sitting in on a few songs. Coleman was thrilled with the new group, and continues to frequently play shows with the band. His feelings were echoed that day, and the new foursome charged ahead with confident tenacity. Pine Box Dwellers: It's not often that one can say that the members of a band are destined to play together. In the case of The Pine Box Dwellers, however, it's more appropriate to say that it was inevitable. Representing two generations of Waycross, Georgia musicians, the band plays its unique brand of swampy, country tinged rock with a sincerity and proficiency that can only come from being born with music in one's veins.

Back City Woods w/ Weston Harris Hill live at The Hummingbird in Downtown Macon

$5

The South. A region loaded with history to say the least. What can be said about it that hasn’t already been said? Who needs another country act with a new angle on this sordid tale? Besides, if you’ve eaten your Grandma’s peach cobbler, haven't you already had the best? A band out of Middle Georgia called Back City Woods has thought about these perplexing issues and answers with yet another question. Do you still hear the call of the westerly winds whispering through the pines at dusk while rocking in a chair on the porch sweet tea in hand, alone, with the thoughts of a life that could have been? If your answer is yes, there’s hope left for the Southern life after all. If no, spin that dusty record again for old times sake. For the future is in the past, and we’re all dead anyway. You already know everything this band has to say, but they say it anyway, and they’re saying it with soul: louder & longer. They’ve released two award winning EP's and now have a full length album: The Light. The Dark. The Dusk. So what does this album bring to the table? Fiddles, guitars, banjo, songs about heartbreak, small towns, and all that Southern stuff. Also, it’s new, and it’s alive. Like you, like me, like the South. We’re here together sharing a semblance of similar existence, and everyday is new. So why experience the tales of the South from those who are decades in the past? There comes a time when Grandma can't make peach cobbler anymore, do we all stop eating cobbler? As life moves forward, as you move forward, so does music. Back City Woods: The South, today.
