paris_monster w/ African Americana live at The Hummingbird in Downtown Macon

$5

Beat-driven. Employing heavy elements of funk and soul, paris_monster closes the gaps between synth-pop & garage; between modern detail and old-school grit. Solid earth. Soaring soundscapes. A mass of noise. Volatility. Vocal singularity.
The Deli NYC calls paris_monster “a precise, complex and sophisticated mechanism" with "a monstrous instrumental technique”, delivering a sound that “could be the new face of American roots rock”.
In fall of 2017 paris_monster began recording their first full-length LP, set to be released in 2018. The album will solidify their dirty, glitchy, lyric-centered, groove-based sound, and will be a milepost in their search for a focused and flexible musical approach. The elements of funk and soul join with lyrical themes of bygone eras in rural settings, characters lost, and mortality confronted. Love achieved, and denied. Americana. Themes in stark contrast to the pounding grooves and electronic mayhem, creating depths and dimensions that could have been otherwise achieved only by dropping a modular synth in the corn fields of central New York or the woods of Connecticut. And maybe that’s exactly what happened.
Lesley Keller of Pancakes & Whiskey said, "Each time I see them perform I’m dumbfounded at just how great they are”. paris_monster’s live show is something to behold. The challenge when seeing them live is getting past the fact that there are only two people creating all that sound. Two people. A drum set. A bass. A keyboard. A eurorack modular synth. One microphone. And all that sound. Beyond this visual impossibility is a careful and deliberate balance of sounds, colors, and textures. Melodies to serve a story. Chaos to destroy preciousness. The Deli NYC observed, “infallible superior forces: as we all know now, 'with great power comes great responsibilities,' and the duo never abuses of it - that's what good musicianship is."
paris_monster's full catalogue is available NOW on iTunes. The Deli NYC said of recent release “Ain’t No Movin’ Me”: “... [paris_monster] showcases its prowess for hook writing/crafting a track that could stand without accompaniment as a blues-y, spiritual declaration, but is launched into another realm by its bed of synths and echoing choruses. An inspired take on blues- folk that's both hypnotic and engaging.”

Jacks River Band live at The Hummingbird in Downtown Macon

$5

Known for their driving blues-rock style and extended improvised jams, Jacks River Band performs with an undeniably contagious energy. Their improvisational funkadelic rock sound features a hard hitting rhythm section, gut-busting guitar leads, and soul soothing vocals. Drawing on legendary influences such as The Allman Brothers Band, Deep Purple, The Grateful Dead, and The Derek Trucks Band, Jacks River Band delivers a uniquely blended sound that pushes the boundaries of blues rock, yet still remains familiar. Their debut album, "Woodland Creatures" was recorded in Atlanta by Tony Terrebone at Zac Recording. The music brings to light the diverse musical influences found among the band members. Tracks like “Bleedin’ Blues” and “Bear Left the Woods” pay homage to the great musical legacy of the Blues, while “Lay Me Down” features hard nosed guitar licks and tribal drum beats reminiscent of the band Tool. Hard driving grooves on “Funkfucious Say”, “Soul Free” and “One Eyed Jack” transport the listener to the early 70’s rock scene, and the feel good, funky vibes on “St Charles” and “Bullfrog” get everyone on the dance floor. In the past year, Jacks River Band has rocked the stage at renowned venues around Atlanta such as Eddies Attic, Smith's Olde Bar, Madlife Stage & Studios, & 37 Main; as well as touring regionally to places like Athens, Macon, Milledgeville, Knoxville, and Boone. They have given back to the community by partnering with The Songs For Kids Foundation and performing at their annual benefit concerts. Their music has been regularly featured on Atlanta's Rock 100.5 "Local Licks" and was featured on Atlanta's 97.1 The River's "Live Lounge Acoustic Classics".

WHPC presents First Friday feat. Josh Card w/ Matt Brantley Band live at The Hummingbird

$5

Josh Card was raised in a small “one stoplight” town in Northeast Florida, where everybody knows your name, the County Fair is the best time of year, and simpler ways of living still exist. His small town beginnings and humble Southern upbringing landed him at age 13 holding a guitar that his Grandmother bought him, sitting on the porch of the house his Grandfather built, at the end of a dirt road, trying to play along with her Conway Twitty albums. The rebellion stage soon followed, and driven by teen angst and a thirst for loud music, Josh spent the next 15 years playing in several successful punk and hardcore acts, touring internationally and releasing several albums. Now, residing in the hills of Kentucky, Josh has reunited with his roots to play the music that he has carried with him throughout the years. The songs he’s been writing and storing are finally being heard. Josh went into the studio in November of 2016 and recorded his first Country album. Pulling elements and influence from his Honky-Tonk and Outlaw heroes, Josh made an album that provides to his listeners what modern day Country music lacks: authenticity, honesty, substance, and soul. In early 2017, Josh released his debut full length album titled “Josh Card and The Restless Souls”. Building steam with his passionate and captivating live performances, the album paved the beginning of his career in Country music. Soon after, he joined the road with Whitey Morgan as a member of the 78’s, playing Honky Tonk across America. In April 2018, Josh began tracking his second album at OmniSound Studios in Nashville, TN. He has set out to make a record that he says will be a “straight forward, from the heart, honest Country record” that is sure to be a game changer in today’s world of watered down, pop induced “Country” music. “These songs come from my deepest, and sometimes, darkest places. I write about what I’ve lived. The heartache, the love, the highest highs and lowest lows.” Josh’s sophomore album is due Fall of 2018 and in the meantime, he and his band are tearing up the highways, bringing his brand of twangy, roots-filled music to a town near you.
