First Friday feat. Voodoo Visionary live at The Hummingbird
Hailing from the Dirty South musical mecca of Atlanta, GA, Voodoo Visionary’s improvisational funk dance music balances a tight, grooving rhythm section with soulful organ, funky clavinet, singing synthesizers, masterful guitar licks, and moving vocals to create a sound the group calls psychofunk. Influenced by a wide array of artists from Parliament Funkadelic and the Meters to the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers Band to Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, Voodoo Visionary has a uniquely blended sound that’s guaranteed to put the 'oogie in yo boogie. The band consists of Dennis Dowd (keys), Trent Gilson (bass), Scott MacDonald (vocals), Jose Rivera (percussion) Mac Schmitz (drums), and Mike Wilson (guitar) and features Martin Anderson (saxophone) and Ben Otieno (trumpet) known as the Side Chick Horns. Over the past 11 years, these players have built a unique chemistry that allows for exceptional improvisation during live shows and relaxed and creative songwriting sessions. Voodoo Visionary released their debut album, Spirit of the Groove in March 2015 and their sophomore album Off The Ground in February 2017. While playing across the country over the last several years, the band has been direct support for Col. Bruce Hampton, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe (featuring Jimmy Herring), TAUK, DJ Logic, Big Something, Zach Deputy, Earphunk, Roosevelt Collier, Jerry Joseph, The Main Squeeze, Futurebirds, Fruition and more. In May 2015, they made their major festival debut at Counterpoint Music Festival near Rome, GA. Since then, they have excelled further into the national music scene with festival performances at Suwannee Hulaween, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Imagine Festival, Backwoods Music Festival, Funk Fest, Purple Hatters Ball, Great Outdoors Jam, and Hookahville. “Voodoo Visionary… synthesizes elements of funk, jazz, disco, and rock ‘n’ roll into their unique improvisational sound.” – Live For Live Music
The Pinx w/ Blood On The Harp live at The Hummingbird
The basic tracks for Sisters & Brothers (April 12th), the upcoming third album by the Atlanta, Georgia-based rock band, The Pinx, were recorded live in the studio, including band leader Adam McIntyre’s insistent vocals. The dueling Allman Brothers-esque guitar leads throughout the album by McIntyre and Chance McColl happen to sound particularly majestic in this setting. “I wanted the audience to enjoy a rock and roll band doing what a rock and roll band does,” McIntyre says of his intentions behind the process of recording Sisters & Brothers. Harmony vocals, guitar solos and extra “studio magic” came later courtesy of two magicians (producers Brian Carter and Joey Jones), marking a departure for McIntyre, who is used to wearing all of the hats. “I’ve tried to be the singer, lead guitarist, frontman, songwriter, producer, engineer and mixer,” he says of his past recordings, “but Sisters & Brothers is a tale of letting two talented engineers do their work while we did ours as a band.” That said, it was still McIntyre’s idea to bring Carter and Jones together. The gamble paid off this time around as Sisters and Brothers sounds like the legit combination of the styles of the men that McIntyre placed at the helm. The songs here are undeniably melodic and hummable, but it’s as if you’re tapping along while careening towards a brick wall. Sisters and Brothers embodies elegance within chaos. “Our previous album (2016’s Freedom) was a party record, but Sisters & Brothers is for darker times,” McIntyre explains. “That’s not a bad thing, though. Darkness is important.” Sisters & Brothers, the third album by The Pinx, arrives on April 12th, preceded by the singles “Mercy!,” “Magic Touch,” and the title track. Hailing from Atlanta, GA, Blood on the Harp bills themselves as simply Songs about Death. This macabre musical outfit creates a sound that harkens to an antique era of American music, with lush string arrangements that drift into rich gothic terrain. Every musical measure embraces traditional mountain music’s rustic sounds, steeped in cautionary tales of murder, deceit, and the devil himself. Backed by punk rock, jazz, classical violin, and outlaw influences, BOTH brings out the call of the grave. Combined, this band is a solemn turn of the century gospel melody with a modern day string band fusion. This Americana/Folk string band is a ghostly tribute to the unfortunate struggles that life brings, as written and told by singer/frontman Miguel Olascuaga, and his mournful choir of lost souls.
