Jive Mother Mary and The Volts live at The Hummingbird

$5

JMM was started by Mason Keck and Seth Aldridge in 2005 in Burlington, NC. They began performing originally as a Power Trio, playing hundreds of shows and releasing an EP in 2007 and an LP in 2009, both with Grammy-nominated producer John Custer. Playing shows in NC, SC, VA, PA, NYC, SD, OH, and others helped the band to gain a following and hone their sound on the East Coast. In 2010 Their good friend Tyler Schulz moved back to NC from West Palm Beach, Florida, and added his unique style of guitar and vocals. At this time, Will Sanders also began playing bass with the group. In 2011, the band moved to Los Angeles, CA to attend Musician's Institute and give the West Coast their unique brand and Southeastern Rock n' Roll. They are currently in the studio working on their third release. The Volts truly began in North Florida, where gospel and soul music lay as thick as the hot, humid air. Band leader Kevin Maines brings a youthful vibrancy to the classic southern R&B/Soul legacy. Kevin’s debut album, American Hustle, received praise for its creative writing, playing, and production, as well as the strong musical maturity rarely seen in debuts. From deep and dirty Duane Allman-esque slide guitar rockers to sweet gospel-inspired falsetto singing, Kevin Maines doesn’t just play in the southern soul traditions, he consumes and then gives them back bursting with his own unique twist. From gritty to ethereal, this music speaks for itself.

After taking a few years to write new material, Kevin put together his second band, The Volts, consisting of bass player Greg Jungbluth, drummer Joey Lanna and Kevin’s brother Derek Maines on keys along with a cast of other Florida musicians to record the follow up album Raiders On The Southern Wild. Kevin Maines and The Volts released their first album in June 2017. Fans of Funkadelic, Son House, Ray Charles, and Prince should take notice. Inspired by the never-ending creativity of D’angelo, this album moves past typical blues song formats and takes creative chances. After a year of steady touring, Kevin Maines and the Volts have shortened the band name to just The Volts. Some musicians dig deep into tradition, while others are endlessly creative risk-takers; every now and then someone comes along that does both. The Volts are those unique individuals.

Eighty Seven Nights w/ Truett live at The Hummingbird

$5

Eighty Seven Nights is a 6-piece rock band based in Charleston, SC. With founding members from NY, PA, WI, DC, NC and TN, their sound comes from a wide range of influences and backgrounds. The band was formed in 2018 while attending College of Charleston. Fast forward to today, Truett has not only developed immensely as an artist, but also as a songwriter and performer, touring all across the US and Europe, supporting the likes of Ron Pope and Jonathan Tyler, and headlining shows of his own. He released his debut self-titled EP in 2016 and now has a sophomore project, Lies and Lightning, under his belt. “This record I focused more on ideas, lyrics and music that I had been carrying with me for a long time. Every song on this record is a story from the road or a struggle that I have dealt with in this industry, I’m very proud of it,” Truett says. Is Truett a soul singer? He was raised on Bill Withers and Stevie Wonder and can croon a Sam Cooke song or shout his lungs out a la Jackie Wilson. Is Truett a guitar virtuoso? Hearing him play is like having Albert Collins throw his drink in your face and kick his muddy boot up on your table to solo at the height of his powers. Is what Truett does easy to define? Absolutely not. He’ll take you from the Mississippi Delta to Prince’s Minneapolis, Chicago blues to Bowery Punk, down through Outkast’s Atlanta and out the other side of the psychedelic rabbit hole. That explosive mix makes for a singular experience. Truett is more than the sum of his influences; what he does is unique and spectacular. His work is evocative of many things, but a carbon copy of nothing that came before. He’s classic and modern, new and old, absolutely stunning in his raw, unbridled authenticity.
